Z Urology Offers Rezum® Therapy to Battle BPH

Z Urology Offers Rezum® Therapy to Battle BPH

To know what Rezum® therapy can do, you must first learn what it is meant to treat. The Rezum® Water Vapor Therapy, which is conducted here at Z Urology is done to treat BPH.

BPH is excess growth of prostate tissue that compresses and obstructs the urethra, reducing the flow of urine from the bladder and sometimes blocking it entirely. Symptoms include waking up multiple times during the night to urinate; frequency, urgency, irregular and weak urinary flow; anxiety; challenges with sexual function and limitations on daily activities.

Rezum® is a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve BPH symptoms by reducing the extra prostate tissue causing the problems being experienced.

How Does it Work

Rezum® is a treatment for BPH that is performed in an outpatient setting. It uses the stored thermal energy in water vapor to treat the extra prostate tissue that is causing the symptoms.

Who Can Benefit from the Procedure

Those who benefit most, are men who have elected to discontinue or who have not taken their take BPH medications. Those who are not receptive to other surgical BPH procedures. And guys who have shown that they are not bothered by symptoms enough to elect an invasive surgical procedure.

What are the Side Effects

Most reported side effects are mild to moderate in severity and are typically resolved within a few weeks. The most frequent side effect being urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, discomfort during urination, or blood in the urine.

How Soon Before I See Results

Improvement for the symptoms being suffered following the procedure is gradual. Significant symptom improvement is typically seen in as soon as two weeks. Keep in mind though, that responses to the treatment vary.

Remember, Z Urology not only does Rezum® therapy, but also provide state-of-the-art urologic care in the South Florida area with a focus on both male and female urology. Dr. Zahalsky Performs Rezum Procedures on Patients with Enlarged Prostates

Dr. Zahalsky Performs Rezum Procedures on Patients with Enlarged Prostates

Dr. Zahalsky is an expert at performing Rezum procedures on patients with an enlarged prostate. The enlarging of the prostate is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). When the prostate becomes too large, then there are medical issues that will soon accompany it. The most common side effect of an enlarged prostate is the issues with urination. This includes frequent, rapid or emergency urination.

Many times, if a male patient is under the effects of BPH, then medicine is the first attempt at reducing the side effects. A lot of men see a reduction in pain and urinary issues following the medicine. However, if this treatment does not work, then doctors will attempt procedures such as a Rezum.

What is a Rezum Procedure?

A Rezum procedure entails the use of sterile water vapor that will be used to shrink the size of the prostate gland. This steam destroys the cells within the prostate that caused it to enlarge. The goal of the Rezum procedure is to have to the least invasive method while also having quick and minimal pain results. The full procedure will take about 10 or 15 minutes. There are options for having a slight amount of sedation for the procedure.

Dr. Zahalasky excels at performing Rezum. He has had extreme success with his patients in his procedures. Below is a link to one of the procedures on Youtube. It is quick and easy. The treatments of steam are portioned out into about 10 second intervals of steam.

When does a Patient Require a Rezum Procedure?

When does a Patient Require a Rezum Procedure?

A Rezum procedure is a transurethral needle ablation procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that can be performed in a clinic or out-patient setting. This procedure uses water vapor to treat the extra prostate tissue. This tissue is usually the cause of urinary dysfunction such as infrequency, urgency, weak stream, straining and getting up at night in order to urinate. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is able to be completed within minutes and even provide very low amounts of pain if any at all.

Assessing the Need for a Rezum Procedure

Most of the time, a Rezum procedure is going to be recommended if you have BPH. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is when the prostate gland becomes enlarged. This enlargement usually causes compression on the urethra which would therein cause the body to have difficulty urinating. Believe it or not, BPH affects more than 50% of men over the age of 50. So, it is not uncommon to experience symptoms.

Although many men receive BPH, not all of them receive a Rezum treatment. This procedure is used mainly when no other medicinal treatments are working or being accepted by the patient. Also, if the patient is not responding well to the surgical options outside of Rezum, but they do agree that something minimally invasive could prove useful. Most of the time, this treatment is used for prostate volumes of 30 – 90 grams.

Are the any Negative Side-Effects of a Rezum Treatment?

First of all, this minimally invasive procedure is used due to the fact that the patient has denied the other means of surgical and medicinal treatments. This procedure is done by inserting the tool through the urethra. Side effects may include painful urination, frequent urination, blood in urine, blood in semen or the inability to completely empty the bladder. Most of these symptoms can be managed with mild pain medication and warm baths.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): 101

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): 101

Patients come to Z Urology for many different reasons. One reason they come is to deal with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), BPH s the most common prostate problem in men. It is called benign because it is noncancerous. Almost all men will develop some enlargement of the prostate as they age, but there are a number of treatments available. Here are some important facts to know when dealing with BPH.

How Common is Benign Prostate Enlargement (Hyperplasia)

Benign enlargement of the prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is the most common prostate problem in men. Almost all men will develop some enlargement of the prostate as they age.

What Group is Most Affected by an Enlarged Prostate

Overall, the number of men with BPH increases with age. By age 60, 50% of men will have some signs of BPH. By age 85, 90% of men will have signs of the condition. About half of these men will develop symptoms that need treatment.

Does Having BPH Increase Risk of Prostate Cancer

Based on research, having BPH does not seem to increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. However, BPH and prostate cancer have similar symptoms, and a man who has BPH may have undetected cancer at the same time.

To help detect prostate cancer in its early stages, the American Urological Association and the American Cancer Society recommend getting screened every year from 50 to 70. They also recommend that men who are at high risk, like African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer, begin screening at 40. Screening tests for prostate cancer include a blood test for a substance called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and the digital rectal exam (DRE).

What are the Symptoms of BPH

Since the prostate gland surrounds the urethra, it is easy to understand that enlargement of the prostate can lead to blockage of the urethra. As a result, you may develop:

  • Frequent urination
  • Slowness or dribbling of your urinary stream
  • Hesitancy or difficulty starting to urinate
  • Feeling of urgency to urinate
  • Need to get up at night to urinate

If Symptoms Progress

The enlargement of the prostate can lead to blockage of the urethra which can lead to the following:

  • Bladder infection
  • Bladder stones
  • Blood in your urine
  • Damage to your kidneys from back pressure caused by retaining large amounts of extra urine in the bladder
  • Sudden blockage of the urinary tube, making urination impossible

How is BPH Diagnosed

To start, a doctor will look at your medical history and give a complete physical. The doctor will perform a digital rectal examination to feel the prostate. Because the prostate gland is in front of the rectum, it is relatively easy for the doctor to feel much of the gland. This enables the doctor to estimate the size of the prostate and to detect any hard areas that could be cancer.

How is BPH Treated

Patients with mild symptoms may not require treatment other than continued observation to make sure the condition doesn’t get worse. This approach is sometimes called “watchful waiting”. There are a number of treatment options available if your symptoms are severe:

Medication

Surgery

Minimally invasive treatments

Risk Factors & Complications of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Risk Factors & Complications of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

bph_prostateObviously, there are risk factors when it comes to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). It is important to know what to look for so that one can take the proper measures for dealing with BPH.

Risk factors for prostate gland enlargement include:

Age. Prostate gland enlargement rarely causes signs and symptoms in men younger than 40. About one-third of men experience moderate to severe symptoms by 60. Half do so by 80.
Family History. Having a blood relative (father or a brother) with prostate problems means you’re much more likely to have these problems.
Food & Exercise. Obesity increases the risk of BPH. Exercise lowers your risk. It is that simple.
Diabetes and Heart Disease. Studies show that diabetes and heart disease as well as the use of beta-blockers, may increase the risk of BPH.

Complications of an enlarged prostate can include:

Sudden Inability to Urinate (Urinary Retention). One might need to have a catheter (tube) inserted into the bladder to drain the urine. Some men with an enlarged prostate actually need surgery to relieve urinary retention.
Bladder Stones. These stones are usually caused by an inability to completely empty the bladder. Bladder stones cause infection, bladder irritation, blood in the urine and obstruction of urine flow.
Bladder Damage. A bladder that hasn’t emptied completely stretches and weakens over time. As a result, the muscular wall of the bladder no longer contracts properly, making it harder to fully empty your bladder.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). The inability to fully empty the bladder can increase the risk of infection in your urinary tract. If UTIs occur too frequently, you might need surgery to remove part of the prostate.
Kidney Damage. Pressure in the bladder from urinary retention can directly damage the kidneys or allow bladder infections to reach the kidneys.

Most men with enlarged prostates don’t develop these complications. However, acute urinary retention and kidney damage can be serious health threats. Having an enlarged prostate is not believed to increase your risk of developing prostate cancer.
