When you have blood in your urine, it’s natural to be concerned about it.AdobeStock 240948680 If you are unsure what to do after experiencing blood in your urine, you’ll want to give this a read. Blood in the urine can be an indication of a serious medical problem, however, it can also be quite benign in other cases.

What Does it Mean?

Having blood in your urine can mean a variety of things, some dangerous, some not. The presence of blood in the urine is called hematuria. When it comes to hematuria, there are two major categories, microscopic hematuria, and gross hematuria.

The former occurs when blood is present in the urine but is not visible while the latter indicates blood that is clearly visible. If you have gross hematuria, it should be comforting to know that it doesn’t take much blood to alter the color of urine which means you’re not losing as much blood as you may think.

That said, if you’re passing clots, you need to seek medical attention. Blood in the urine can mean anything from a simple and easily treatable UTI to a more serious issue like kidney disease, bladder stones, or an enlarged prostate.
