Urethral and bladder slings are surgical treatments designed to provide support to the urethra or bladder neck, preventing involuntary urine leakage. These procedures are particularly effective for patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), offering a long-term solution that can dramatically improve quality of life.
The benefits of this treatment are:
Bladder and urethral sling surgeries are used to treat urinary incontinence that cannot be successfully treated with medication. A surgeon uses your own tissue, strips of synthetic mesh, or animal or donor tissue to create a sling under your urethra or bladder neck. The sling supports the urethra and helps keep it closed to prevent urine leakage.
At Z Urology, we offer two main types of sling procedures, as explained below. Our experienced urologists at Z Urology will determine the best approach for your specific condition during your consultation.
Tension-free slings (or midurethral slings) do not require stitches. The procedure uses a strip of synthetic mesh tape to support the urethra. Scar tissue eventually forms around the mesh and keeps it from moving.
There are three approaches:
A conventional sling uses synthetic mesh tape, your own tissue, or donor tissue to create a sling under the urethra or bladder neck.
The sling is pulled through an incision in the abdomen and the surgeon adjusts the tension. Each end of the sling is attached to pelvic tissue using stitches
The urethral sling procedure at Z Urology is typically performed as an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia. Here's what you can expect:
The entire procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes. Patients can usually go home the same day, and most experience minimal discomfort.
It’s important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
