Kidney Stones: What You Need to Know

Kidney stones are a common but painful urological condition that affects 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives.

Stones are made up of solid minerals that crystalize and then must pass through the urinary tract. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball.

Small kidney stones may go unnoticed, passing through the urine naturally. However, larger stones can block the flow of urine, cause bleeding, and result in extreme pain.

According to the Urology Care Foundation, more than 1 million Americans annually get kidney stones. Risk factors can include being overweight, frequent dehydration, various medical conditions, and suboptimal dietary habits.
