Record Number of English Men Treated For a Broken Penis Last Year

fractured-penisThis is something you wouldn’t even wish on your worst enemy, but a record number of men have undergone surgery after fracturing their penis in 2019, according to NHS statistics.

This has mostly affected men in their 30s and 40s, while a grand total of 164 men wound up hospitalized with a fractured penis last year. That’s 164 too many, and 38 percent more men compared to 2014-15.

Gordon Muir, a consultant urologist at King’s College Hospital in London, said that these figures are likely the tip of the iceberg. Many men are too embarrassed to seek medical help quite often.

So How Does it Happen

It sounds like the stuff of urban legend, but a penile fracture occurs when the firm, fibrous sheath that supports your erection, called the tunica albuginea, is placed under extreme pressure and snaps.

The rupture often happens during sex, snapping under the weight of your partner’s body (or as the result of a powerful thrust) and is usually accompanied by a gruesome popping sound.

The erection quickly subsides, and the penis becomes swollen, painful and bruised, requiring the repair of a surgeon to stitch the tissue back together and prevent permanent damage.

When left to its own devices to heal, a broken penis can actually result in Peyronie’s disease, where scar tissue builds up inside the penis and causes it to bend severely, possibly resulting in erectile dysfunction.

You can avoid this terrible fate by switching up your sexual routine. Research shows that doggy style is the most lethal position, causing 44 percent of penile fractures, followed by the missionary position, which is responsible for 25 percent of breakages.
