A vasectomy reversal is an outpatient procedure that often takes 2-4 hours. Before the procedure, you’ll need a consultation with a urologist. During this consultation, a Z Urology doctor will assess your medical history, conduct a physical examination, and discuss the different types of vasectomy reversal procedures.
If you decide to proceed with the reversal, you’ll undergo preoperative testing, including a semen analysis. This analysis determines if sperm is present and evaluates its quality and quantity.
The vasectomy reversal process consists of:
- Anesthesia: The patient will typically be unconscious during the procedure.
- Incision: We will make an incision in the scrotum to access the vas deferens—the tube that was cut during the vasectomy procedure.
- Vas Deferens Examination: We will examine the ends of the vas deferens to see if any scar tissue, blockage, or other abnormalities could interfere with the reversal process.
- Vas Deferens Reconnection: If the vas deferens ends are healthy, we will reconnect them using a microscope and tiny surgical instruments to reconnect the tubes precisely.
- Closure of Incision: Once the vas deferens reconnection is complete, we will close the incision with sutures.
After the procedure, you’ll be monitored in the recovery room briefly before being released to go home. Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. You can usually return to work within a week or two and resume normal activities within a month.
