What is Aquablation?

Aquablation is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a high-velocity water jet to remove excess prostate tissue. This innovative approach offers several advantages over traditional BPH treatments.

Benefits of Aquablation include:

  • Precision: Combines real-time ultrasound imaging with robotic control for accurate tissue removal.
  • Preservation: Heat-free technology helps preserve sexual function and continence.
  • Customization: Treatment is tailored to each patient's unique prostate anatomy.
  • Efficiency: The procedure typically takes less than an hour, with most patients returning home the same day.

Signs of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

If you have an enlarged prostate (also known as BPH), here are some common signs and symptoms you might experience:

  • Increased Urinary Frequency: You may feel the urge to urinate more often than usual, especially during the night.
  • Urgency: You may feel an urgent need to urinate, but when you do, you only pass a small amount of urine.
  • Difficulty Starting Urination: You may find it hard to begin urination, or you may need to strain to start the flow.
  • Weak Urine Stream: Your urine stream may be weak, or it may stop and start.
  • Dribbling: After urination, you may experience dribbling, which is the involuntary loss of urine.
  • Incomplete Emptying of the Bladder: You may feel that your bladder is not completely empty after urination.
  • Urinary Retention: In some cases, you may not be able to urinate at all, which is known as urinary retention.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): BPH can increase the risk of UTIs due to urine remaining in the bladder for longer than it should.
  • Hematuria: This is the presence of blood in the urine, which can be a sign of BPH or another condition.
  • Bladder Stones: BPH can cause bladder stones to form, which can lead to pain and other complications.

It’s important to see a urologist if you experience any of these signs and symptoms, as they can be indicative of BPH or another underlying condition that requires medical attention.

What Happens During an Aquablation Procedure?

Aquablation is a minimally invasive surgical treatment that uses a robotically controlled water jet to remove excess prostate tissue. During the procedure, you can expect:

  1. Preparation: Before the procedure, the patient will be given anesthesia or sedation to ensure their comfort. They may also receive antibiotics to prevent infection.
  2. Imaging: The surgeon will use ultrasound or other imaging techniques to visualize the prostate and surrounding structures.
  3. Treatment Plan: The surgeon will use the imaging information to create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s anatomy and needs.
  4. Aquablation: The surgeon will insert a small cystoscope through the urethra and into the prostate. The scope contains a small, high-pressure water jet that is used to precisely remove excess prostate tissue. The surgeon controls the waterjet with a robotic arm, ensuring accuracy and reducing the risk of damage to surrounding tissues.
  5. Scope Removal: Once the Aquablation is complete, the surgeon will remove the scope after making sure bleeding is controlled to ensure no complications.
  6. Catheter Insertion: A catheter will be inserted into the patient’s urethra and guided to the bladder to allow urine drainage after the procedure.
  7. Recovery: The patient will be monitored in a recovery room until they are fully alert and their urine remains clear.  Most patients can go home the same day as the procedure, but it is possible patients may need to stay overnight.

Aquablation has several advantages over traditional surgical treatments for BPH, including reduced risk of complications, faster recovery times, and improved quality of life. By choosing Z Urology for your Aquablation procedure, you can rest assured that you are receiving expert care from a team of experienced urologists.

Is Aquablation Safe?

Aquablation is considered a safe and effective treatment for BPH. Clinical studies show low rates of complications with minimal risk to sexual function. The precision of robotic technology and real-time imaging contribute to its safety. While all surgeries carry some risk, Aquablation has demonstrated a favorable safety record compared to traditional prostate surgeries.

Patient Feedback for Z Urology

Our patients are the reason we strive for exceptional urological care and treatment! Here’s what some of our South Florida patients are saying about their experience at our clinics.
  • I have recommended many people to this office and each one has thanked me. On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the best), Dr. Z and his staff are a 12.
    – Alex S.
  • The wait was not long. I was greeted by a friendly nurse who took my sonogram of the kidneys and bladder. The doctor came in after a short time. Dr. Hollowell has a gentle voice and great bedside manner. He is very informative about my issues and I left feeling relieved and hopeful for future visits. The receptionists were also helpful and friendly. I recommend this office. Just wish it was closer to home.
    – Allison T.
  • "I found Doctor Varghese through my insurance provider network and read reviews in Healthgrades. Dr. Varghese is terrific. She explains things so they are easy to understand. I feel she is on top of several medical problems I’m having. I had a cystoscopy and was offered nitric oxide (mild gas). It was perfect. I have had the procedure in the past but it was the most uncomfortable feeling I ever experienced. Not this time. Doctor Varghese is an excellent listener and remembers what I tell her from the previous visits.

Let me sum up my feelings about being under Dr. Varghese's care. I have new health insurance now so I can see doctors near my home, but instead I’ll continue to drive 75 miles each way to and from Pompano Beach to Stuart, FL [to see her].”
    – Jeffery P.
  • “I've been coming here for cancer for 10 years and I've had nothing but good visits every time. Staff is friendly and the doctors and PA'S are great. Dr. Z takes the time to ask questions and explain everything. He is amazing.”

    – Bill S.

  • “Dr. Brar was awesome! He was very thorough with everything to ensure we got to the bottom of my issue! I felt like he cared and listened. I will be going back. The office was busy and some people were waiting a while but I was seen fairly quickly, I did fill out all the paperwork ahead of time so not sure if that helped! The person who helped me at the front desk was great and helped me with all my questions.”
    – Britney C.
  • Everyone seemed nice, friendly and welcoming. I was also impressed with the examination and the way the staff treated me. Dr. Mike took the time with me to listen and advise me as to what treatment plan might be needed.
    – Jimmy Z.
  • Great specialist, hard to find a more personable and efficient medical office anywhere else. I was welcome from the moment I came in, everyone was very friendly and all my questions and needs were expertly attended to. Never been to a urologist so this was new to me, but I definitely felt comfortable and heard. It was a drive from neighboring Miami but well worth it. Highly recommend. Thanks, Dr. Z!
    – Jose T.

  • Thank you Dr. Michael Zahalsky for the surgery, you changed my life completely. I'm so happy, now no more pain and I'm feeling better than ever, thanks again for the great staff in your office. Very professional. Felt like family.

    – Jeremy C.

  • Three words: Kind, Caring and Compassionate! This office is the best of the best. The front desk employees are super friendly and the doctors are professional and spoke to me in a down-to-earth & making it easier for me to understand what was going on. I am able to make informed decisions with the material that was provided to me.
    – A.D.Z.

  • I had a great first visit with Dr. Z and his staff. I was seen within a reasonable amount of time. Dr. Z was personable and, after hearing my history and doing a targeted physical exam, directed his staff to perform ultrasound and bladder testing which was done efficiently and with discretion. Dr. Z then came in and spent a good amount of time explaining a clinical treatment plan. I left feeling I was in the hands of a total professional office from the top down.
    – Harvey A.

  • Z urology is the best and I have to say Dr. Zahalsky is extremely knowledgeable and such a humble and pleasant human being. I always feel welcome at Z Urology.
    – Kimaro W.
