What is a Penile Prosthesis?

A penile prosthesis, also known as a penile implant, is a surgically placed device designed to help men with erectile dysfunction achieve an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. This treatment is typically considered when other ED treatments have been unsuccessful.

The penile prosthesis is surgically implanted into the penis. There are two types of penile prosthesis: inflatable implants and semirigid implants.

Semirigid Penile Implant

Semirigid penile implants are implants that remain permanently firm.

You will maintain an erection at all times and will have to adjust the position of the penis as needed:

Straightening the penis will allow for intercourse.
Pointing the penis down will conceal the erection.

Inflatable Penile Implant

Inflatable implants must be pumped up prior to having sexual intercourse. Usually, the inflatable penile implants will consist of three components:

A reservoir under the abdominal wall that will store fluid.
A pump and release valve inside of the scrotum move the fluid to and from the cylinders which will be used for inflation.
Inflatable cylinders in the shaft of the penis produce the erection.

Erectile Dysfunction Signs and Symptoms

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that affects men of all ages and can significantly impact their quality of life. Here are some of the common symptoms of ED:

Difficulty Achieving an Erection: Men with ED may have difficulty achieving an erection sufficient for sexual activity.
Reduced Sexual Desire: Men with ED may experience a decrease in sexual desire or interest.
Trouble Maintaining an Erection: Men with ED may have difficulty maintaining an erection during sexual activity.

Erectile dysfunction can have a variety of causes, including physical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. It can also be a result of psychological factors such as anxiety, stress, and depression.

What Happens During a Penile Prosthesis Procedure?

The procedure for penile prosthesis takes 1-2 hours in an outpatient setting. Here are the steps involved in penile prosthesis surgery.

Anesthesia: You'll receive either general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia to ensure you're comfortable during the surgery.
Preparation: The surgical area is shaved and cleaned with an antiseptic solution. A catheter may be inserted to collect urine during the procedure.
Incision: The surgeon makes a small incision below the head of the penis, at the base of the penis, or in the lower abdomen.
Tissue preparation: The surgeon opens the erectile tissue in the penis that normally fills with blood during an erection.
Implant placement: For inflatable implants, the surgeon will insert the cylinders into the penis, place the pump into the scrotum, and position the fluid reservoir in the pelvis near the bladder. For semirigid implants, they’ll insert the semirigid rods into the penis.
Testing: The surgeon tests the device to ensure proper function.
Closure: The incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.
Dressing: A sterile dressing is applied to the surgical site.

After the procedure, you'll be moved to a recovery area where medical staff will monitor you as you wake up from anesthesia. Most patients can return home the same day, but you'll need someone to drive you.

Recovery time varies, but most men can resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions on caring for the surgical site, managing pain, and when you can safely use the implant.
