What Is a Neurogenic Bladder?

A neurogenic bladder is a medical condition in which nerve signals are not being properly transmitted to the bladder. This can happen for many reasons, such as damaged nerves or spinal cord injury. Neurogenic bladders can be painful and difficult to manage, and require the use of medication.

One common causes of a neurogenic bladder are spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries affect the way the brain communicates with the body, so patients may experience urinary problems like incontinence or a weak bladder wall. However, SCI does not always cause neurogenic bladder; some people may have neurogenic bladders for no known reason.

In addition to spinal cord injuries, there are several causes of neurogenic bladder. Another common cause is damage to the nerves that connect your brain to your bladder. Injuries and infections can also damage the nerves that control urination, causing a neurogenic bladder. Some diabetes, heavy metal poisoning, and certain medications can cause neurogenic bladder as well.

Once a patient has been diagnosed with having a neurogenic bladder, it’s essential to seek treatment as soon as possible. This condition is particularly hazardous when combined with a urinary tract infection as the infected urine will be redirected back into the kidneys, causing further damage.
