Understanding Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s disease is a condition that causes scar tissue to form in the penis. There are many possible causes of Peyronie’s disease, including injury to the penis, infection, and certain medications. In some cases, Peyronie’s disease can be inherited.
The first step in diagnosing Peyronie’s disease is ruling out other potential causes of penile curvature. One of the most common symptoms of Peyronie’s disease is noticeable penile curvature.
In some cases, it is plaque that causes the penis to bend and the curve appears in a place other than the usual location of the plaque. The plaque forms because of a buildup of scar tissue within the penile shaft that causes it to grow over time, which may cause an erection to become painful or difficult to achieve.
Other symptoms include pain when urinating or having sex, a lump on or near the penis, and bruising on the shaft or head of the penis.
Finally, after ruling out other causes of curvature, such as injury or medication, your doctor may perform a physical exam and order blood tests to check for anemia or other problems.
Although there are many possible causes of Peyronie’s disease, they can be grouped into two main categories, congenital and acquired. Congenital Peyronie’s disease occurs when an individual is born with a malformed or damaged penile shaft that lacks collagen fibers in its outer layer. Acquired Peyronie’s disease occurs when the collagen fibers in the penile shaft become damaged for some other reason, such as surgery or injury.
