Studies Show Kidney Stones Found to Increase Stroke Risk

Studies Show Kidney Stones Found to Increase Stroke Risk

Z Urology is reporting new findings in the medical community. This information is important because we treat this exact issue daily. Recent studies have shown that patients with kidney stones have a modestly elevated risk for stroke, especially ischemic stroke, according to the findings of a recent meta-analysis.

The meta-analysis, which examined data from eight studies (7 cohort studies and 1 cross-sectional study) involving 3,526,808 participants, found that the presence of kidney stones, compared with their absence, was significantly associated with a 24% increased risk of stroke, Min Yuan, MD, of Jiangxi Provincial People’s Hospital in Jiangxi, China, and colleagues reported online ahead of print in Neurological Sciences.

Kidney stones were significantly associated with a 14% increased risk of ischemic stroke and a nonsignificant 7% increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

When the investigators excluded studies with a high risk of bias from analysis, kidney stones were significantly associated with a 16% increased stroke risk. Kidney stones were significantly associated with an 18% increased stroke risk among individuals with a follow-up duration of ten years or more. The investigators found no significant association between kidney stones and stroke risk among participants with a follow-up duration of less than ten years.

“Our meta-analysis found a moderate association between kidney stones and the risk of stroke incidence after adjustment of established cardiovascular risk factors, especially in ischemic stroke,” the authors concluded.

The mechanisms by which kidney stones increase stroke risk remain unclear, Dr. Yuan noted. Previous studies have shown that kidney stones are associated with hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and smoking, all of which are known risk factors for stroke, he noted.

The investigators said their study has some important strengths compared with a previous meta-analysis. “To our knowledge, this article provides a more systematic explanation of the relationship between kidney stones and stroke risk. It also conducts stratifying analysis on some known influencing factors.” The authors acknowledged that the small number of studies included in their meta-analysis was a study limitation.

Apparently COVID-19 Causes Erectile Dysfunction in Men

Apparently COVID-19 Causes Erectile Dysfunction in Men

Z Urology, like everyone else in the US, notices that every time we turn around there’s new insight about COVID-19. And in typical COVID-19 fashion, more information has been discovered. One study is now shedding light on the repercussions of the virus on men’s sexual and reproductive health.

The study has found that surviving COVID-19 may be associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). The research points to three factors that can lead to the potential onset of ED in men who have had the virus:

  • Vascular effects. Erectile function is a predictor of heart disease. We now know that the vascular system and the reproductive system are connected. We also know that COVID-19 can cause hyper inflammation throughout the body, especially in the heart and surrounding muscles. Blood supply to the penis can become blocked or narrowed as a result of a new or worsened vascular condition caused by the virus.
  • Psychological impact. Sexual activity is closely associated with mental health. The stress, anxiety and depression caused by the virus and pandemic can be linked to sexual dysfunction and poor mood.
  • Overall health deterioration. ED is typically a symptom of an underlying problem. Men with poor health are at greater risk for developing ED and also for having a severe reaction to COVID-19. Since the virus can cause a plethora of health issues, general poor health is cause for concern both for ED and other complications.

Another cause for concern is the potential testicular damage that can occur following infection with COVID. It’s too early to tell if the damage would be permanent, temporary or if it can affect fertility. Age is also an important aspect to consider, as it’s a risk factor for developing both ED and a severe case of COVID-19.

If you are in need of a urologist in South Florida due to ED from COVID, then contact Z Urology for a team that is dedicated to delivering world-class expertise in urology, along with an unwavering commitment to their patients. Our three locations to choose from are located in Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs and Pompano Beach.
